Prague - Czech Republic
Prague is the capital of the Czech Republic and its largest city. It is often called the golden city, the city of red roofs or the city of hundred turrets. All these nicknames are true. It lies on the Vltava river and its area is 496 km2. The population of Prague is about 1,35 mil people.
The city of Prague was established over 1000 years ago and it is famous thanks to the Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque eras. On top, the city of Prague was the capital of the Kingdom of Bohemia and was the main residence of several kings, the most famous one was the Czech King and the Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV (1316–1378). It was also a very important city to the Habsburg Monarchy. The city of Prague played major roles in the Bohemian and the Protestant Reformations and the Thirty Years' War. Later Prague was the capital of Czechoslovakia between the World Wars and the post-war times.
The capital of Prague is famous for many well-known cultural attractions. The major places not to miss include the Prague Castle (Hradčany), Charles Bridge (Karlův most), Old Town Square (Staroměstské náměstí) with the Prague astronomical clock (Orloj), Vyšehrad, or the Petřín hill. From the year 1992, the historic centre of Prague is on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.
There are many major museums in Prague, together with numerous theatres, galleries and other historical exhibits. Prague is also a home to a broad range of public and private educational institutions, including the Charles University from 1348. It is the oldest university in Central Europe.
